We are pleased to announce that five students in the MAE Department have been awarded the VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award 2025/26 for their outstanding final-year projects with elements of “Innovation” and “Sustainability”.

The VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award is the initiative of VTech Corporate Services Limited (VTech) to promote innovation and awareness of sustainability. The Award is open to final-year undergraduate students studying Energy and Environmental Engineering (EEEN) or Mechanical and Automation Engineering (MAEG) in the academic year 2025/26.
With a generous donation from VTech, the Award recognizes and rewards students for their final-year projects that demonstrate excellence in developing innovative technology for the sustainable development of the world.
The five students were nominated to give a presentation and attend the award presentation ceremony at the VTech Office on 8 June 2026. The judging panel consisted of representatives from VTech and the MAE Department, namely Dr. Allan Wong (Chairman and Group CEO of VTech), Mr. Andy Leung (Chief Executive Officer of VTech Contract Manufacturing Services), Mr. Hillson Cheung (President of Telecommunication Products of VTech), Ms. Shereen Tong (Group Chief Financial Officer of VTech), Prof. Qiguang He (Assistant Professor of MAE Department), and Dr. Dongkun Han (Senior Lecturer of MAE Department).
We would like to thank VTech for its effort to promote innovation and awareness of sustainability in CUHK.

NG Lok Hin (Champion)
Receiving the VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award is a profound honor and a perfect milestone in my journey at CUHK. I am incredibly grateful to the Department and my professors, whose guidance empowered me to bridge advanced engineering theories with real-world green solutions. Standing on the stage, I felt a deep sense of responsibility to use my knowledge for global sustainability. I hope this achievement inspires my EEEN peers to continue innovating for a greener future.
LAM Ngo Tin Gideon (1st Runner-up)
I was very surprised when I heard that my FYP project had gotten me yet another award. I never intended to aim for any award when I chose this topic of zinc rechargeable batteries. Instead, I chose it because of my interest in energy storage, especially chemical batteries made from abundant materials. I never intended to achieve any breakthrough in this field of batteries as well, because I am just an undergraduate and this field is heavily researched. Anyway, I put forth my best ideas for this project, because only by putting my own ideas to the test can I call the FYP my own work. I am really glad that my effort has been honored, and this FYP will become a highlight in my portfolio.
WONG Siu Ching (2nd Runner-up)
I am truly grateful to CUHK and VTech for this meaningful award. It is a great honor to receive the 2nd Runner-up Award of the VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award. My research focused on characterizing the aggregate flexibility of microgrids to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy in high-density cities like Hong Kong. I would also like to express my deepest thanks to my FYP supervisor, Prof. Yue Chen, for her continuous guidance and support throughout this project. This achievement marks a happy ending to my university life, and I will carry forward the spirit of innovation and sustainability in all my future endeavors.

Thank you, VTech, for providing this wonderful opportunity to share my work on sustainable energy management alongside such innovative peers. This experience has deepened my commitment to applying my engineering skills to help Hong Kong achieve its green transition goals. I will continue to develop robust, practical technological solutions that contribute to our society’s sustainable future.
CHAN Myae Yamon Thwin (Honorable Mention)
As a final-year student graduating from EEEN, I am grateful to have been nominated for the VTech Innovation and Sustainability Award 2025/26. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Yue Chen for her invaluable guidance and constant support throughout this journey. My project addresses grid instability and blackout risks in isolated microgrids caused by renewable energy intermittency. To resolve this, a Robust Optimization framework was developed using MATLAB, YALMIP, and GUROBI to minimize net output fluctuations across 8,760 hours of Hong Kong climate data. Besides presenting the results of my project alongside my peers and their excellent research, I was also excited to see VTech’s green and innovative efforts reflected in their products during the company visit.
