Congratulations to Dr. Dongkun Han on receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2023 and the SCGE Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2023!
Dr. Han and his team have developed an AI-enhanced e-learning system in teaching mathematic foundation courses, to meet the students’ customized learning needs at different learning levels adaptively, as an auxiliary system to the existing standard and unified mathematic education at the Faculty of Engineering. The basic idea is that students could be dynamically evaluated by an e-learning system on different contents in learning mathematics, and personalized teaching materials could be supplied via this e-learning system, which is formed via an Artificial Neural Network model trained by Cognitive Development Optimization Algorithm.
The objectives of this pedagogy include:
- An AI-based e-learning system is built, where personalized teaching materials could be provided adaptively. The e-learning system consists of two main components, i.e., iTest and iLearn.
- Through the sub-system iTest, students could be dynamically evaluated and classified at different learning levels, on sorted contents of mathematic courses. Students, on the other hand, could obtain self-fitting exercise questions based on their learning levels.
- According to the evaluated learning level of each student, the sub-system iLearn furnishes with substantial and suitable learning materials, like supporting reading references and illustrating examples, in which students could further strengthen their understanding of mathematic concepts and theorems regarding their learning level.
Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award
The Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award Scheme was launched in the year 1999 to give recognition to outstanding teachers. The award serves not only as a recognition of the contributions of the awardees in the area of teaching, but also reflects the University’s commitment to providing quality education.
SCGE Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education
Over two hundred teachers offer GE courses at CUHK, all of whom are dedicated and many, outstanding. In recognition of their contributions, the Senate Committee on General Education (SCGE) resolved in 2006 to launch the Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education. The Award is presented annually by the SCGE to normally up to four teachers in recognition of their exemplary contribution to teaching and learning in GE.
