Kwong Sze Oi Sarah, a student in the Energy and Environmental Engineering (EEEN) Programme, became the first Hong Kong woman to throw the javelin beyond 50 metres at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2026, breaking the Hong Kong women’s javelin record, which had stood for a decade.
Every record-breaking performance requires determination and perseverance. Even when faced with challenges, Sarah remained steadfast in her belief. The EEEN student drew inspiration from the principles she learned through her studies.
“It’s natural to have moments of uncertainty. I’ve experienced similar lows before, and every time I’ve gone on to break a record, a difficult period came first. It’s just like a roller coaster in engineering: the deeper the descent, the more energy it stores and the greater the momentum for the climb ahead. Together with my faith, this belief gives me the confidence to keep moving forward,” Sarah said.
Sarah was admitted to the EEEN Programme through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme. The MAE Department warmly congratulates her on this remarkable achievement.
